Here is a fabulous article about the most common trajectory for new homeschooling families. They pull out of the system because its lame. They recreate the system at home only to discover the industrial model is lame, even at home. Then they begin to give up relax. Relaxing creates an opportunity for them to observe how children learn. They end up with some mix of child led learning and are happily on their way.

"I also began to realise that this wasn’t just about us educating our daughters; rather the experience of home educating was teaching us about life and learning all over again, and in a way that was so much more powerful than either my wife or I experienced when we were at school."

  1. I liked the story, but I liked his wall book even more! The wall book kind of does, in a smaller but more chronological way, what an encyclopedia does: spreads a whole bunch of info out there for you to browse at will. Pretty awesome.

  2. Agreed. I thought we should probably buy one of those.

"They talked about wonderful food, superlative facilities, excellence in health and safety, anti-bullying and, of course, their great results, but none ever volunteered a zero-tolerance policy on boredom."

  3. spot on for the process...a very straightforward portrayal. As for the wall book, thank you for the link. I have been of late dreaming of a wall story of our family, with cultural and historical events tied to the very people from whom we descended and their role in the global story, and in there, the unfolding story of the natural world. I am glad for the idea to start at the beginning. Water, chromosomes, DNA, fungi etc...

always good to share your discoveries, thank you.
