Its done!  A felted wool tree skirt for the newly weds.  

If ever there was a project to make me feel like a little old lady, this was it.  But I remember staring at the stockings we have, made in this style, when I was a small child.  I adored them.  I soaked in all the tiniest details.  I stared at them, once a year, intently and felt longing and happiness.  It seemed to me there were messages embedded in each little decoration.  It turns out, the message is in the whole:  I love you.
