Here's my boy and his best friend. These two understand each other and have a strange wonderful simpatico. Which makes a mother's heart glad. She's a smart one. Thanks to my girl for the picture.
A mother stared at me. "That's right" I repeated. "He didn't pick up a book until he was 10. But now he reads chapters." "But, what about reading Benjamin Bunny, to himself, and loving what he discovers. He'll never have that memory. I would never deny my son those sweet times." She felt so sad for my boy. I felt sad too. "I don't know what I've missed. I've missed 1,000 windows of opportunity, and 1000 ways I could have enriched his life. But, I guess, what we do as unschoolers is walk in faith, pure faith in the child and their ability to find their way." She stared more. I stood there in silence. I was in front of a class of adults. I shrugged. "I think it's okay." I said quietly. And for once, I really did.
Thanks for walking this road with me - mostly digitally - always with heart.
He can read Benjamin Bunny to a future child, his own, a niece or nephew, a friend, and enjoy it just as much that way. Life is full of opportunities for happiness. love, Val
